The numbers in the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) report for May were all positive for the Mesquite tourism industry.

Visitor volumes rose 1.9 percent in May to 118,100 people versus last year’s total of 116,000 visitors. Las Vegas visitor volumes showed a slight 0.8 percent increase while Laughlin had a 2.2 percent decrease.

Gross gaming revenues in Mesquite casinos increased 5.9 percent over May 2017. The gross take came in at $11.329 million, up from $10.701 million last year.

That compares to a 5.1 percent increase in all of Clark County for the month. Gaming revenues on the Las Vegas Strip increased 6.3 percent and Laughlin showed a 1.7 percent increase.

Gaming revenues on the Boulder Strip declined a minuscule 0.2 percent while downtown Las Vegas fell 3.5 percent.

Total occupancy rates in Mesquite’s hotels and motels increased 4.5 percent to 81.2 percent from May 2017. Total room nights occupied increased 5.3 percent to 47,700 with the average daily room rate rising 5.9 percent to $60.97.

Revenue per available room (RevPAR), an important economic indicator in the hotel industry, jumped 12.1 percent to $49.51. In May 2017 RevPAR was $44.16 for Mesquite hotels.

Average daily auto traffic on I-15 at the Nevada Arizona border increased 6.5 percent to 29,596 vehicles every day.

Total occupancy rates in Laughlin’s hotels and motels in May were exactly the same as a year ago at 64.6 percent.

The average daily room rate in Laughlin increased 12.0 percent to $53.17 with RevPAR also increasing 12.0 percent to $34.35 over last year’s numbers. Total room nights occupied decreased 0.6 percent in Laughlin to 197,500.

Airplane passengers in Laughlin fell 6.6 percent to 19,998 in May while average daily auto traffic on Highway 163 into the river town rose 0.9 percent to 4,806 vehicles each day.

Traffic counts on I-15 at the Nevada California border increased 4.7 percent with the counts on all major highways into Las Vegas increasing overall by 2.5 percent at 122,794 vehicles daily.

The LVCVA always cautions that auto traffic counts are a blend of both commercial and resident traffic in addition to visitors.
