While Virgin Valley High School Bulldog coach Josh Tyrell’s boys golf squad’s amazing improvement may not show up in overall team scores this year, they will in individual goals. “Compared to last year, our improvement for some of the kid’s is 15 to 20 strokes off their 2015 scores,” said Tyrell.

“We planted the seed and they ran with it. They are practicing on their own and are really enjoying golf. We have eight players on the team and will travel with six. Five are strong and need to get ready for tournament play. They are top seed Hogan Fowles, second seed Nathan Hulet, third seed Braden Johnson, fourth seed Cullen Groelle and fifth seed Jaron Dalton. Jose Ramos should be our sixth traveling member.

“I tell the kids, unless you play sports in college it’s pretty much over after high school, but golf is forever. There are no cheerleaders out here; it is all about your will to learn the game. We are fortunate in Mesquite to have unlimited support from local golf courses who support the kids and our program. We practice at the Oasis courses, CasaBlanca, Palms and Falcon Ridge and get in time at Wolf Creek.”

Fowles led the Dawgs last year making the 1-A Sunrise League first team and second team All-Division. The Dawgs open the season at a Needles, CA tournament on March 14 and league play at Wildhorse Golf Course in Las Vegas on March 29.
