The Virgin Valley High School track and field team began practice Monday Feb. 29 at the Dawg Pound. Bulldog coach Gary Hartman selected 26 girls and 41 boys to this year’s roster.

On the girl’s side, Hartman said,” Our gals have a lot of talent. Numbers again will be an issue. We should be a better invitational team as opposed to the small meets. We have about the same numbers as last year but are strong in individual events.

“Senior Kaydee Bingham is a strong sprinter performer in the jumps. Add Elizabeth De Leon and Emily Teerlink to the sprint field and you have the makings of a good relay team. Juniors Emma Barnum and Bernice Fiso surprised us by coming out for track this year. Barnum will add strength to hurdles and jumps. Fiso will be a point getter in both the discus and shot putt and could threaten school records in both events. Dylan Bryant should also be a threat in the pole vault and high jump.”

“We have better numbers on the boy’s side with a core of experience and talent which will help us,” said Coach Hartman. “Kai Mitchell will again be strong in the hurdles. Senior Dallen Wolfe and Danall Wilkins add experience to the hurdles. Sprinter Pedro Osuma returns in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Freshman Christian Martinez and Vicente Pinto have a lot of promise in the dashes. Pole-vaulter Charles Erickson returns for another season. Ryan Rushton again will help us in the middle distances.”

The Bulldogs open the season again in their ‘Early Bird Invitational Track Meet’ on March 11. Anywhere from 11 to 15 schools participate annually. The Bulldogs will host a quad meet on March 16, the only other home date on the calendar.
