The Virgin Valley High wrestling team easily defeated Chaparral in the Dawg House, 60-25, on Tuesday night, Jan. 26. A large enthusiastic home crowd roared with every move on the mat by the Bulldog grapplers. The Dawgs had six pins and four forfeits to outdistance the Cowboys one pin, one forfeit and two decisions against the young Dawgs.
The evening began with the school administration and wrestling coaches honoring seniors and their families. Receiving medals were Rafael De Santiago, Garrett Hafen, Arden Bundy, Marlan Felshaw and Joel Matteson.
The Bulldogs jumped on top early on a 39 second pin by Jacob Baird at 126 pounds. The Cowboys took a short lived 9-6 lead on a decision and forfeit. Tim Moedi, wrestling at 145, gave the Dawgs the lead at 12-9 pinning his Cowboy opponent in 1:29. Crescent Crandall won by forfeit at 152, upping the Dawgs lead to 18-9. Senior Rafael De Santiago won his match at 160 by forfeit.
Bulldog Marlan Feldshaw, wrestling at 170, had the quickest pin of the evening at 17 seconds giving the Dawgs an unsurmountable 40-13 advantage. The Cowboys won the 182 match on a major decision. Bulldog Dayden Payne won in 52 seconds at 195. Bulldog senior Arden Bundy took the 220 class in pinning a Cowboy in 31 seconds.
There was a double forfeit at 285. Bulldog Ty Smith won his 106 match on a forfeit. Bulldog Angel De Santiago wasted little time at 113, pinning his Cowboy opponent in 22 seconds. The Cowboys won the last match of the evening at 120 on a pin at 4:31.
This was the last home match of the year for the Bulldog wrestlers. The Bulldogs end the season at Boulder City on Thursday, Jan. 28.
