The Mesquite Police Department’s annual “Shop with a Cop” event will soon be coming to town. Every December the Mesquite Police Department (MPD) hosts “Shop with a Cop” for local youngsters. This December, children who are carefully pre-selected based upon their needs and circumstance will be picked up at their elementary school by Police Officers in full uniform and taken on their very own special Christmas gift shopping spree.

During their spree, the officers and children will enjoy one-on-one time together picking out gifts for the child and the child’s family. After the shopping carts are full, the gifts are purchased, and shopping excitement is over, they are off to Elks Lodge (#2811) to eat lunch and meet Santa.

Preparations for the event begin weeks ahead of time.  This year Sgt. John Woods is leading the fundraising effort and is determined to make sure everyone in the community knows there is an opportunity to contribute to this fantastic program. “Our officers are taking informational flyers to local businesses and we are sharing information with as many people as we can.  The Mesquite Police will also display a “Shop with a Cop” float in the Inaugural Mesquite Parade of Lights as part of our efforts,” Woods said.

“The thought of a child not having any gifts to open on Christmas morning is absolutely unacceptable. With the help of the community through their support and generous donations MPD will continue to host “Shop with a Cop” every year,” said Police Chief Troy Tanner.

MPD would like to thank all past and future supporters of this special heartwarming event. Donations to “Shop with a Cop” can be dropped off at the Mesquite Police Department, located at 695 Mayan Circle. Checks should be made payable to the Mesquite Police Department.
