Swimmers, The City of Mesquite Department of Athletics and Leisure Services is now taking registrations for this summer’s Swim Team “The Manta Rays”. This is a both a recreational and competitive level swim team program that focuses on teaching and promoting good sportsmanship, encourages self-esteem and team work.

The team will officially begin practice on June 8 and will run until August, practicing every Monday through Thursday. There will be 2 practices; an 8:00 a.m. advanced practice for the more seasoned and competitive swimmers and a beginner/intermediate practice that will start at 9:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday. The Swim Team coaches will determine what level and time your child will be practicing. For those individuals that want to get going sooner, we will have non mandatory practice (Open Swim) the open swim for participants will begin May 12, 2015 Tuesdays and Thursday from 6 – 8 p.m. until school is out, and then we will begin the official morning practices on the 8th of June.

The Purpose and Philosophy of the program is to practice and develop strong swimming strokes and improve personal times and skills. This program emphasizes personal improvement. The Departments purpose is to provide opportunities where youth can learn the fundamentals of a sport and learn sportsmanship through participation. The ultimate goal is to encourage skill development and foster a positive attitude. There is a program fee which includes practice four days per week, T-shirt, and two home meets. Away meets are also available for swimmer participation.  All swimmers wanting to join the program should be able to swim a minimum of 25 yards in Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke, or have a Red Cross Level 4 certificate.

The Mesquite Recreation Center is offering several water programs; the outdoor pool is  available for lap swimmers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 5 – 6:45 a.m. This time is designed for a total workout that is controlled by the participant which gives them an opportunity to refine their strokes.

Another way to get your workout before going to work is being part of the Deep Water Aerobics & Water Aerobics class which is offered 6 times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7-7:45 a.m. in the outdoor pool and at 8–8:45 a.m. at the outdoor pool. This class will be a total body workout for participants with little to no impact on joints. Weight belts will be used to help participants float. This class is perfect for anyone that is looking to build some muscle and tone up, but especially those with joint or arthritis problems.

Family Swim Night is held at the outdoor pool and will be hosted every Monday & Wednesday evenings from 6-8:30 p.m. until further notice.
