Virgin Valley High School Lady Dawg’s 54-30 win over the Sunrise Mountain High School Miners Wednesday, Jan. 6 was a mirror image of the win over Moapa Valley Monday night, Jan. 4 as the Dawgs trailed 18-17 with two minutes left in the first half. Five quick points by Emma Barnum gave the Dawgs a 22-18 lead going into the break. After being shut out in the first, Barnum had 11 of the Dawgs 12 points in the period. Bernice Fiso added eight points all in the first period.

The third period was all Bulldogs as Brianna Todd and her Dawg teammates outscored the Miners 25-6 to end the quarter with a 47-24 advantage. Todd hit for 14 points in the period to lead the Dawgs. Bulldog coach Chimane Creer pulled all her starters to begin the last quarter except for Todd who hit her second three of the game to give the Dawgs the 54-30 victory.

Although a raggedly-played game for three periods, the Dawgs’ run of 19-2 between the second and third period buried the Miners giving the Bulldog faithful optimism going into the stronger part of the schedule.

Todd led all scorers with 20 points followed by Barnum with 14 and Fiso with 11 points. The win kept the Dawgs on top of the Sunrise League standings with a record of 4-0 and 6-7 overall for the season.
