It was another tough week for Virgin Valley High School boy basketball team as they had two tough losses to archrival Moapa Valley and Sunrise Mountain High Schools.

The Dawgs hosted Moapa Valley High in a rematch of an early season loss at the Pirates den. The Dawgs came out on the short end of a 67-61loss to the Pirates on Tuesday January 28 in the Dawg House. The Pirates led from start to finish despite the Dawgs battling late until the Dawgs needed to foul. “We were right there at the end,” said Bulldog coach Mark Barnum. “We had to foul to try and win the game, but the Pirates converted their free throws and we missed 4 of 5 shots in the paint. “ The Bulldogs had no answer for the Pirates point guard Lukas Walker and center Cameron Reese. Walker had 25 points and Reese finished with 19 points. Walker and Reese hit five of six from three point range to keep the Dawgs at bay. Will Barnum led the Dawgs with 20 points followed by Koden Tietjen with 10 points.

The Bulldogs finished the week at Sunrise Mountain on Thursday Jan. 30, losing the host Miners 57-56. The Bulldogs had a poor start and fell behind for most of the game but battles back and took a one point lead with 50 seconds remaining in the game. The Miners countered with a put back off a miss to take the lead 57-56 with 17 seconds remaining. “We had a good look at the basket for the win,”said Coach Barnum. “We played hard against one of the best teams in our league and just came up a little short.” Stats for the game were not available. The Losses dropped the Dawgs to 1-8 in league play and 4-13 overall. The Bulldogs host SLAM Academy on Monday February 3.
