The Virgin Valley High boy basketball team began 2020 3A Sunrise League play with two losses last week. The Bulldogs hosted Sunrise Mountain on Jan. 8 losing a hard fought game 68-63.
The Bulldogs fell behind early to the Miners trailing 24-15 after one period of play. The Dawgs battled back to trail 40-35 at the break.
“We let the Miners get up early on us and had to battle back to get in the game,” said Bulldog coach Mark Barnum.
The Miners stretched their lead to 58-47 after three periods before the Dawgs began their comeback in the fourth period. The Dawgs trailed by only two points late in the game but couldn’t convert on a one and one free throw attempt and had to foul the Miners. The Miners converted and finished the game on top 68-63.
The Bulldogs traveled to SLAM Academy on Friday January 10 losing to their hosts 61-56. The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick start against the Bulls leading 20-13 after one period and 32-25 at the break. The Bulls took over the game in the third period outscoring the Dawgs 21-7 to take a 46-39 advantage into the fourth and final period. “We played a good fourth period,” Barnum said. “We were able to close the gap but free throws down the stretch were our downfall. Our kids played well and worked hard.”
The Bulldogs host Lincoln County on Tuesday Jan. 14 and continue league play against Boulder City on Thursday Jan. 16.
