Eleven years ago a group of “old guys” got together for the common love of softball; they called themselves “Mesquite Geezers.”  Today they call themselves “Mesquite Legends” and they very well may be considering they run around like kids and they’re all 50-80 years old with most players being in their 60s and 70s.

The Mesquite Legends are mostly men but they welcome any woman who wants to come and have a good time; currently there are only two who have risen to the challenge and aren’t afraid to show their skills.

Most players on the team are from Mesquite but they do have some players joining them from the nearby communities of Arizona and St. George, Utah.

Mesquite Legends fall softball league begins Oct. 23 and the league is still looking for new participants.

Players are able to join anytime during the season but it’s probably best to come to some of the team practices to see how your skills match up. You don’t have to abe a Joe DiMaggio to play, you just need to have some fundamental skills and be able to run.

Some players join the teams in every game, some just play as a part time activity, they’re very flexible and you should be too.

Practices are held at Hunter field on Monday and Wednesdays from 7-9 a.m. and games follow from 9-10:30 a.m. and the cost to play is $35.

The league does take into consideration the advanced ages of the players and have put into place a number of safety measures in the rules to keep players injury free.

Mesquite Legend Ken Juber says, “This is not ‘Old Man’ T-ball. Most players are fit, active and quite good. The game is not an intense competition; it’s more about good sportsmanship, camaraderie and having a good time. Many of the players from new friendships and there’s a sense of brotherhood among them.”

Softball is a great way to stay fit and active, you’ll have tons of positive support from your team members and if you contact Bruce King at 702-563-9591, you can become a Legend too.
