The Virgin Valley High School Bulldog basketball team kept their composure Wednesday night January 23 rallying late to defeat the Sunrise Mountain High School Miners 52-46 for their first 3A Sunrise League win of the season. The Dawgs were led by Braden Bingham with 14 points followed by 10 points from Will Barnum.  “It felt good to win our first one,” said Bulldog coach Will Barnum.” The kids played well tonight especially our bench. Their teamwork was enjoyable to watch.”

Turnovers dominated the first period as neither team could not find their rhythm. The score after one period found the teams tied 7-7. The second period showed a slight improvement as the Dawgs behind Bingham’s 9 points took a 23-20 advantage into the locker room. Despite shooting woes, the intensity of the game increased as the teams had seven lead changes, ending the third period with the Miners up 35-24. The fourth period featured several lead changes before Bulldog Daxon Toone hit a jumper giving the Dawgs a 44-43 lead with 2:32 remaining in the period. Miner point guard Moises Garcia hit a long three ball putting his team up 46-44. Bulldog center Jeremy Perkins responded pulling down a rebound and scoring underneath tying the match. It was all Bulldogs the rest of the way as point guard Koden Tietjen hit a jumper followed by two free throws giving the Dawgs a 50-46 advantage. Jared Memmott closed out the scoring with two free throws to end the game. Guards Garcia and Daiquan Sykes led their team with 20 points. The Bulldogs record went to 2-12 as they travel to Sky Pointe Friday January 25 to face the Eagles.
