The Virgin Valley High School Lady Bulldog soccer team continued their drive to the Nevada 3A State soccer tournament with a strong 4-2 win over Sunrise Mountain High School Miners Wed. at Bettye Wilson Park. The Lady Dawgs were led by Bulldog striker Abbe Barnum’s two goals. Kari Wakefield and Ally Wright added a goal each for the Dawgs. Despite dominating the first half, the Bulldogs were held scoreless until the 36 minute of the first half, until Barnum broke free and hit goal giving the Dawgs a 1-0 lead going into the break.

The Bulldogs increased their lead to 2-0 nine minutes into the second period on a goal from freshman Ally Wright. Wright trailed Barnum down field and put Barnum’s blocked shot attempt into the net. The Miners came right back a few minutes later with a goal cutting the Dawgs lead to 2-1. The Dawgs got a goal of their own a minute later on a Madison Cheney pass to Wakefield to take a 3-1 lead. The Miners would not go away scoring goal once again cutting the Dawgs lead to 3-2. Barnum put the game away scoring goal on a pass from Kallie Graves giving the Dawgs the 4-2 win over the Miners. “It took us awhile to get going,” said Bulldog coach Bob Snell. “We moved the ball well which set up scoring opportunities. I liked the way we came back and answered the Miners goal. The goal by Kari from Cheney was text book passing and finishing. We need to play better defense Thursday to stay in the tournament.” The Bulldogs face Western High School (14-5-2) at 6 pm at Wilson Park. The Warriors shut out Bolder City 4-0 to advance to the semi-finals. The Bulldogs (12-6-3) are one win away from going to state. The Bulldogs started the season 0-5-2 before going 12-1-1 the rest of the way. One of those early defeats was a 4-0 white wash by the Warriors.
