A group of middle and high school orchestra students who are particularly gifted in music joined together earlier this year to share their love of music not just among themselves but throughout the community.

The Harmonic Strings Chamber Group was established as a non-profit group in December 2015 and introduced their music to the public during a city council meeting Jan. 26. Since then, they’ve played many other places.

The mission of these talented teens, their coordinator, Abby Snow and the many parents who support them is to encourage other youth in the community to learn to play instruments. These gifted teens and their parents know that their musical experience has helped them improve their academics, build their confidence and teach them the discipline and patience that will help them achieve their goals. They want to share that knowledge and those blessings with others.

According to Snow, the members of the group wanted to perform and share their very diverse and eclectic love of music with the community but there were very few and far between opportunities for that to happen so the teens got together along with their parents and solved that issue.

Snow and other parents, giving them 100 percent of their support, began working on making community performances happen. The group reached out to local nursing homes and other businesses, anywhere that would allow them a venue to share their talents. One of those venues was McDonald’s on Mesquite Blvd. Seven high school and middle school students, along with three parent chaperones, set up outside the restaurant on Friday, Feb. 12 and entertained all who passed by.

The teens play music of any kind from classical to movie themes and they are so gifted that most of them play by ear. “Many of them have never played certain selections before but they can jump right in and play along. All the kids help each other out and they are so musically gifted that they catch on very quickly,” said Snow.

The group would like to reach out to the community for support as well. According to their hand-out information “We need to cover costs for instrument purchases and repairs, travelling, equipment, materials and other related expenses. We accept donations of any amount to help cover these expenses. Donations can be made at any America First Credit union in person or by phone under the name ‘Harmonics Strings Chamber’ or by contacting the coordinator. A donation receipt will be provided.”
