The Virgin Valley High School flag football team was as cold as the weather Thursday night, Jan. 7 as they fell behind the Del Sol High School Dragons 19-0 late in the first half before rallying to make the final score a respectable 25-20.
The Dawgs had no answer early for the swift Dragon backs as Del Sol took the opening kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown seven minutes into the game. Dragon quarterback Loren Craner hit swift receiver Estefany Gonzales for 14 yards and the first T.D. of the game. The point after failed.
The Dawgs drove to the Dragons 15 yard line behind the passing of Kallie Grave before the Dragons defense stiffened stopping the Dawgs on the three yard line. The Dragons wasted little time scoring as running back Kalijah Williams took a pitchout and went 51 yards for the score upping the Dragons lead to 12-0 with 11 minutes remaining in the half.
The Dawgs went three and out on their next possession turning the ball back to the Dragons. The Dragons went on the march again behind a Craner pass to Gonzales setting up a first down on the Dawgs five yard line. The Dawgs forced a fourth down attempt, but could not handle a double reverse as Gonzales scored again for a 19-0 Dragon lead with eight minutes remaining in the half. The Bulldogs behind the running of Graves drove to the Dragons 15 yard line before a Graves scoring pass to Katie Zuniga gave the Dawgs six points with 18 seconds remaining in the first half cutting the Dragons lead to 19-6.
The Dragons opened the second half of play with a long drive and a score upping their lead to 25-6 eight minutes into the half. The Bulldogs countered quickly with a score behind a 25 yard completion to McKenzie Leishman and a 30 yard run to the Dragons one yard line by Elizabeth DeLeon. Zuniga ran it in cutting the Dragons lead to 25-12. The Bulldogs held the Dragons on their next possessions setting up another T.D. drive with a little over four minutes remaining in the game. Graves ran it in from the three yard line. Graves P.A.T pass to Dylan Bryant was good making the final score 25-20 for the Dragons.
The win keeps the Dragons in first place with the Dawgs dropping to 4-1. The Bulldogs travel to powerhouse Boulder City on Friday Jan.15 before returning home to host Chaparral on Jan. 20.
