On Friday, Jan. 1 Boulevard Furniture held a two day tax free sale at its store on W. Pioneer Blvd. The items in the store were marked down and shoppers were able to find many great deals to take advantage of in the New Year if their purchases totaled at least $499.

Store Manager Darlene Myers said, “This is corporate advertising they create in St. George. The store is always coming up with new ideas and new ways to promote and increase business.”

The sale came at the right time for Nevada residents who experienced a sales tax increase on the first day of the new year. The increase enacted by a 6-1 vote by county commissioners is aimed at putting more police officers on patrol in Clark County under the More Cops program. The increase added a 0.05 percentage point increase to the county’s sales tax rate, boosting it to 8.15 percent from 8.1.

According to an article in the Las Vegas Review Journal the tax increase is expected to generate about $19.4 million over each of the next 10 years, including $14.6 million annually for Metro.

Myers expected to see a steady flow of customers all day. The prediction didn’t seem so far off since they had already seen over a dozen customers in the first hour after they had opened.

Store employee, Anita Ortega-Macias, was kept busy showing customers all the great deals of the day and explaining the 6 to12 month, no interest, payment options available to shoppers. Along with the in-house, interest free payment options, there is an outside finance company that will allow an 18 month payment plan for qualified buyers so shoppers had a variety of plans and deals to choose from.

One of the shoppers that day, Vivian Thacker, was ready to take advantage of the deals available for a new television. Thacker didn’t have prior knowledge of the sale but had a need for a new set when her old one broke over the holidays. She was very pleased to see not just the sale prices but the chance to save a few bucks on the tax and spent some time carefully looking over her choices.

The first 25 customers who walked through the door received prizes ranged from hardware kits to hiking packs. Thacker was also pleased to receive one of the hiking packs and thought that her prize and her luck in happening in on the day of the sale was a great start to her New Year.
