On Wednesday, Nov. 25, Virgin Valley Elementary School will be participating in the first annual Ethan Mendenhall’s Thanksgiving Memorial Run. All the students will run the perimeter of the playground (the endurance run) in honor of Ethan.
Ethan loved to participate in P.E. and especially loved running. The students will be participating and competing with their grade level. The run will be timed and the results will be used for a grade on each students’ physical fitness testing grade. Parents or other spectators are asked to keep the running area clear and that there is no interference of the runners with high fives or pats on the back while there are students running. There will be a white spray painted box on the grass and all spectators should remain inside of the designated area. Each grade level has an assigned time during the day to participate.
After the completion of the run, all students will receive their “courage token” symbolizing brave enough to try and honoring Ethan for his courage during his battle with cancer. The winning class from each grade level will receive a traveling trophy that was donated by City Shoppe to keep in their classroom for the year. An awards ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. by the front entrance of the school and a dedication of an Ethan’s Memorial and balloon release is scheduled at 2:30 p.m. in the same area.
The front parking lot on Woodbury will be closed from 1:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday so that the awards ceremony, balloon release and dedication ceremony can be held in that area without any danger to participants.
