The Desert Dames celebrated their 20th Birthday at The Oasis Grille Room Wednesday, April 22. The Desert Dames Half Notes were on hand to celebrate with a variety of fun and familiar tunes led by their director, Jan Blain. President Darlene Carpenter announced the names of members with birthdays in April and asked them to stand while the group sang Happy Birthday.
After the entertainment, the Dames continued to enjoy the celebration with a taco salad bar and mouth watering desserts including a 20th Anniversary cake.
The Half Notes are a group of twenty-four women who enjoy singing and performing around town. Their Leader, Jan Blain explained that the criteria for joining are pretty simple. The person must be a member of the Desert Dames and must enjoy singing. Blain said it’s not necessary to be a great singer as long as one has the desire to have fun singing.
The singing group is just one of many activity groups under the umbrella of the Desert Dames. Members also enjoy bunco, golf, cards, gardening, quilting, bowling, and hiking to name a few. The Dames meet monthly for luncheons (except in July and August) with speakers and entertainment and they sponsor a yearly fashion show and other activities for members. Several ladies who wanted to meet new friends in their new hometown and get involved in fun activities established the Dames as a purely social club in 1995. Today the group has over 400 members.
Next month members will enjoy a picnic and a monthly luncheon with speaker Yoli Bell from the Mesquite Cancer Help Society.
Anyone at least twenty-one years of age who lives in Mesquite and surrounding areas can join the Dessert Dames for $25.00 and meet new friends while enjoying many fun events and activities. To join or learn more about the social group, Call Membership Chair Debbie Oskin at (702) 346-0811.
