Mesquite held its version of the ‘Rites of Spring’ Monday night at the Old Mill Road baseball fields as the Virgin Valley Little League kicked off their third season of play. Hundreds of kids, old and young alike, celebrated spring in the valley. Bagpiper Dennis Hangey started the late afternoon event with patriotic song. The Veterans Honor guard posted the colors before Councilman Geno Withelder led the throng in the Pledge of Allegiance. Brian Wursten sang the national anthem and clergy David Anderson and Patrick O’Neil gave short prayers for a safe and sound season for the youth of our community.
Mesquite Mayor Al Litman threw out the first ball to softball catcher Alexis Boatwright of the Landtrends Team. “Wow what a crowd,” said councilman Withelder. ”We have come a long way in such a short time, since you (Lou Martin) brought your idea to my attention. We have an amazing 35 teams participating.”
The first night’s action featured softball teams competing in three age brackets. Full schedules and scores will be available on our website at www.mesquitelocalnews.com.
