The Virgin Valley High School Lady Dawgs defeated the Wells High School Leopards 52-41 Friday evening in the Dawgs’ first game of the Bulldog Invitational. Leading the Dawgs were Emma Barnum, Bernice Fiso and Kourtney Metzger with 11 points each. Metzger added seven blocked shots for her nights work.
The game began slowly as the Dawgs led 12-9 after one quarter of play. Barnum had the hot hand and scored six points in the period. The teams turned it up a notch in the second quarter as their offenses began to hit more consistently. The score found the Dawgs up by a score of 32-26. Metzger tallied five points followed by Spencer Green and Fiso with four. Thirteen turnovers by the Dawgs kept the game a lot closer than the score indicated.
The second half of play could have been described as helter-skelter basketball as the Dawgs and Leopards traded turnover after turnover. The Dawgs committed 18 T/O’s in the half but stretched their lead to 41-31 after three periods. Four Dawgs managed 9 points in the quarter. The Leopards outscored the Lady Dawgs 11-10 in the fourth quarter making the final score 52-41. Metzger and Fiso dominated the last period with their offense and defensive play.
The Dawgs will face Dixie High School at 1 p.m. in the semi-final round. The Flyers defeated Valley High School (Las Vegas) 52-16 in a later game. The game of the day could be the matchup of Panguitch and Desert Oasis High Schools who won easily over Moapa Valley 78-24 and Clark 62-16 respectively. The Panguitch squad returns to defend their title. The battle will begin at 11:30 a.m.
