TUESDAY: THE NET SCORE OF THE DAY WAS 75

The annual club championship was over last Sunday.  The two club champions teed it up together on Tuesday and both played in a more relaxed atmosphere.  Jon Hawkins recorded a ho-hum 38-41-80 and Andrew Yeh a 40-40-80 walk in the park.  The player that did step up was Tim Miller shooting a 37-40-77 to win medalist.  Manny Lira (94) took home first place low net with a 71.  Paul LeVan (81) and Gary Denhalter (91) tied for second, net 72, until LeVan parred the second handicap hole for the second spot dropping Denhalter to third.  Jim Barfknecht just back from his successful “Morris Masters” tournament, grabbed the 4th place with a net 74.  And finally breaking up a six way tie for the 5th net spot, 75, Irace won it with a nice par four on the 6th hole.

The putt of the day, was some 47 feet, stroked in by Paul LeVan with his birdie on the 11th hole. The oddity of the day was Gary Denhalter, Lew Roney, Dan Trowler and Don Mannon all shot 91’s on the back side.

THURSDAY: LEVAN TIES THEN BEATS HAWKINS

The new MMGA champion, Jon Hawkins, now has a “target” on his back.  He and Andrew Yeh are the players to beat by the lower handicappers.  Paul LeVan tried to do just that at the Palms golf course on Thursday.  Hawkins had to sink a eight foot par putt on the last hole to tie LeVan when LeVan bogeyed.  Both players scored 80 but LeVan took the title on the first handicap hole with a par five.  Hawkins was rimming the jar all day long but could not record a birdie. Dan Trowler shot a a very nice round of 42-45-87 a net 69 and won first place low net by two shots over Gary Denhalter (88) and net 71.  Manny Lira shot a steady round of 46-47-93 to win third low net at 72.

Paul LeVan had the hole of the day on the par four 12th.  His drive was pushed out in to the desert on the right.  He took his drop penalty and his third shot from 178yds landed to the right of the tree.  His fourth shot, a chip from nearly next to the tree landed short of the green and rolled to within six feet of the cup where he sank his putt for a really nice bogey five.

The next scheduled play is on Tuesday, Nov25th at the Falcon Ridge at 8:00 and Thursday, Nov 27th Thanksgiving at a resort to be decided.  Always check your sign up sheets for any corrected times or places.  Anyone interested in joining the MMGA can call 346-6363.  Also check out our website at www.mesquitemensgolf.com.
