Andrew Yeh, playing from the black tees,   and John Meyer playing from the forward gold tees tied for low gross honors on Tuesday at Falcon Ridge.  Both players shot 77.  Yeh 38-39 and Meyer 36-41.  The first handicap hole broke the tie with Yeh’s par four taking first place low gross and Meyer, settling for second low gross.  But both players were rewarded with “greenback” rewards.  John Sabraw (92), just back from his summer retreat,  was rewarded first place low net with his 68.  Second place went to Tom Durenberger (85) and a net 69 when he parred the 13th hole and Ed Hoepfner (80) and also a net 69 bogeyed.  Lew Roney (85) and Joel Reilly (94) tied for fourth but Roney earned that 4th spot with a bogey to Reilly’s double bogey on the FHH.  How many times has it been said how important the first handicap hole is.  This day six of the seven winners were tied and decided by that hole.

Welcome back “snowball” John Sabraw.   Welcome to the MMGA new members J. D. McNeil, David Miller and “Chooch” Clark.

Thursday at the Canyons was the last warm up day for this weekend’s MMGA 2014 Club Tournament.  At the end of the day there were three players tied for medalist honors.  New member Tim Miller, Dick Swayne and seven years in a row champion Ron Manthey all tied with 76’s.  Miller took the  even route with two solid rounds of 38-38.  Swayne fired a 39 on the front and a very nice one over par 37 on the back side.  The perennial winner, Manthey just shot 40 on the front with three birdies and an ugly eight on the par five eighth.  But really focused on the back nine shooting a even par 36 with two birdies for his 76.  The determination of Manthey proved positive, as it took four holes, and a Manthey birdie, on the 4th hole, to beat Swayne and earn his first place low gross title.  Roger Mueller, from the forward tees shot 78 for fourth low gross and Andrew Yeh finished out the under 80 scores with a 79.  Mueller’s round netted a 65 for first place low net.  Swayne was second with net 67.  Pat Smitty (85) took the third net spot with 69.  Dennis Simmons (92) and net 70 came in fourth and Lew Roney (85) fifth with a net 71.  The foursome of Manthey, Thomasino, Jordan and Durenberger won the birdie award with seven.

The shots of the day were recorded by Ron Manthey on hole four when his tee shot from 166 yds stopped 4 feet from the cup for a birdie 2.  Tom Durenberger had the other with a 144yd bunker shot to within four feet for his birdie/ sandy three.

The next scheduled play is on Tuesday, Nov18th at the Falcon Ridge at 8:00 and Thursday, Nov 20th at 8:30 at the Palms.  Always check your sign up sheets for any corrected times or places.  Anyone interested in joining the MMGA can call 346-6363.  Also check out our website at

Skins take GAS Club by surprise

Wednesday’s outing for the GAS Club was a familiar format for the players, with two scores per team on all holes except for the par threes.

There was one team shy of a player so they were able to draw a player from one of the other teams, resulting in Kevin Drover, who helped seal the deal and enable that team to win by just 6/10 of a stroke. Drover was joined by Roy Lende, Larry Mierisch and Dave Calmelat.

Closest to the pin winners were Clark Mitchell on hole #2, Roy Lende on hole #5, Ron Vedd on hole #8, Larry Mierisch on hole #14 and Alex Churchich on hole #17.

In rare fashion, there were nine skins recorded for Wednesday, despite having half as many players as there were on the previous Monday, where there was only one skin turned in.

Skins winners were Kevin Drover, Bob Chambers, Andrew Yeh, Bill Losh, Clark Mitchell, Dave Calmelat, Larry Mierisch, Jim Buttler and Roy Lende, all with birdies.

The GAS Club outing for Monday, November 17 at Falcon Ridge Golf Course is filling up fast, with a 1:30 p.m. start. Players are encouraged to show up early to ensure a spot in the teams.
