The eighth annual Rotary Club’s ‘Golf Ball Drop’ and ‘Brickyard Plaza Block Party’ was not heavily attended as past events, due to weather worries, but went off without a hitch. The event began at 3 p.m. with a car show of classic and unusual vehicles while various Mesquite non-profit groups manned booths raising funds for their youth programs. Young and old alike tried their hand on winning prizes spinning wheel of fortune devices. Food and refreshments were available throughout the plaza as a DJ entertained the crowd with a variety of music.
The pace of the day seemed to move quickly as anticipation grew for the main event, the ball drop. Attendees paid $2 for two balls and $100 for ten balls with all the money going for youth, food bank and Rotary projects. The audience counted down as a Rotary club member pushed the button opening the ball container. Hundreds of balls fell into a grid with 10 holes which determined the winners. The top prize was a check for $1000. Winners were determined and their names announced to close the evening.
