For most of three quarters, it appeared that the Beaver Dam High football team would get its elusive first victory of the season.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for the Diamondbacks as visiting Green Valley Christian scored two second-half touchdowns to rally for a 22-12 victory Friday night at the Snake Pit in the season finale for both teams.

The loss kept the D-Backs winless for the season at 0-9 overall and 0-5 in 1A South League play while GVC finished 3-2 in league and 3-5 overall.

Beaver Dam led 12-8 late in the third quarter and was holding its own against the Guardians. But with 1:07 left the period, GVC scored on a 41-yard run that gave them a 14-12 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

The D-Backs made a goal line stand midway through the fourth quarter by stopping the Guardians on the two-yard line. After failing to move the ball, Beaver Dam was forced to punt from deep in its own end zone giving GVC great field position at the BDHS 25.

Six plays later, the Guardians scored on a one-yard run with 2:55 remaining and then converted on a two-point conversion pass to leave Beaver Dam down two scores.

Green Valley Christian scored on the first possession of the game going 80 yards in seven plays with the touchdown coming on a 24-yard pass play. A two-point conversion pass made 8-0 after just three minutes of play.

The Beaver Dam defense stiffened and didn’t allow the Guardians to score again until late in the third quarter.

The BDHS offense, meanwhile, put together two touchdown drives in the final minutes of the first half to take a 12-8 lead at the halftime break.

Senior running back Cesar Soto broke free down the left sideline on an 80-yard touchdown run with 5:06 to go in the half to bring the D-Backs within 8-6.

The Diamondbacks surprised the Guardians with an on-sides kick following the score, recovering at the GVC 49. BDHS drove to the Green Valley Christian four-yard line where Chris Wilson plowed into the end zone with 42 seconds left in the half to put the D-Backs up 12-8.

Soto, playing in his final game for the D-Backs, rushed for 188 yards on 14 carries. Wilson, a junior, added 60 yards on 16 carries and also completed a pass to Donovan Peterson for 23 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball for the Diamondbacks, Westin Gustaveson came up with an interception while Michael Leach and Blaine Gustaveson had fumble recoveries.
