The Beaver Dam High volleyball team picked up two huge home victories in 1-A South League play last week to get back in the hunt for possible postseason play.

The Lady D-Backs improved to 3-1 in league play and 12-6 overall following victories over Word of Life, 3-0, and Indian Springs, 3-1.

With just three remaining league matches against Pahranagat Valley of Alamo, Liberty Baptist of Las Vegas and Green Valley Christian of Henderson, BDHS must realistically win one of those three to have a shot for the postseason. Two wins would probably get them in.

It won’t be easy, however.

“All three of those teams are the top three teams in our league,” BDHS head coach Charyn McDonnell said. “Most of our girls have only played two years of volleyball or are just freshmen. They’ve never faced pressure before.”

The top four teams qualify for postseason play. Beatty is also in the mix for the fourth and final playoff spot and holds the tiebreaker over Beaver Dam.

“We’ll see how the girls handle the pressure against those three teams,” McDonnell said. “We’ve got to play better than we did against Indian Springs to beat them.”

Indian Springs stunned Beaver Dam on Friday winning the first set 25-15. The Lady D-Backs responded by capturing the next three sets 25-9, 25-16 and 25-17 to win the match.

“I don’t know what we were doing in that first set,” McDonnell said. “We settled down and started serving and passing. That was the difference.”

Shyanne Pierce served 10 points and had two aces in the second set while April Snyder served six points with an ace. Nancy Lopez had an ace while Elizabeth Jensen had four kills to go along with two aces including the game winner.

Leading 19-14 in the third set, Pierce stepped up and served three straight points including an ace to keep the Lady B-Backs in control. Jensen finished off the set with a kill to put BDHS up 2-1.

In the fourth set, Christina Leach, Marissa Horner, Lopez and Jensen served aces. Jensen added two kills, including the game winner, and Pierce also had a kill.

In Wednesday’s victory over Word of Life, both Horner and Lopez led the way by serving a perfect 12-of-12 with five aces apiece. Lopez also was credited with six digs.

Jensen added 11 kills and Pierce eight while Snyder recorded 25 assists.

Beaver Dam will host Coral Academy of Science Tuesday in a non-league match at 5:30 p.m. before playing Pahranagat Valley Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Lady D-Backs final two matches of the regular season will be at home against Liberty Baptist on Oct. 29 and Green Valley Christian on Nov. 1.
