It was Homecoming week at Beaver Dam High School and the BDHS volleyball team capped off the festivities by sweeping visiting Founders Academy of Las Vegas, 3-0, Friday afternoon inside the Snake Pit.

The Lady D-Backs prevailed by scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-19 to improve their overall record to 4-5.

“I’m very happy with how much these girls have improved,” BDHS head coach Charyn McDonnell said following the match.

The win came three days after BDHS fell, 3-0, to Water Canyon at Hilldale, Utah, in a match that McDonnell said her team “competed at a high level.” Water Canyon prevailed 26-24, 26-24 and 25-21.

In Friday’s victory over Founders Academy, the Lady D-Backs used a combination of strong passing and serving to capture the first two games.

Two kills apiece by Elizabeth Jensen and Shyanne Pierce, plus a solid serving run by Christina Leach, helped stake BDHS to an early 12-7 lead in the first game.

After the Centurions cut the margin to 23-21, the Lady D-Backs got a big kill by Jensen and then won the game when Founders Academy was out of alignment on the winning point.

In the second game, Jensen opened by serving seven straight points including three aces to put the Lady D-Backs up 7-0. Leach followed with three service points and one ace to increase the margin to 13-2.

Following kills by Jensen and Nancy Lopez, BDHS held an 18-9 margin. The Centurions rallied to within 21-15, but Pierce served out the final three points to end the game.

“Serving and passing wins games,” McDonnell said. “I thought we did both very well today.”

The third game saw both sides make mistakes with neither team able to take control. Trailing 16-14, the Lady D-Backs grabbed momentum thanks to six consecutive service points by Lopez to put BDHS on top 21-16.

Jensen then closed out the game and match with an ace to start the celebration.

“We didn’t play as well during the third game, but mistakes are going to happen,” McDonnell said. “Those who make the fewest mistakes usually come out with a win.”

The Lady D-Backs will be on the road for their next four contests – Tuesday at Sandy Valley and Friday at Mountain View Christian School in Las Vegas. BDHS will travel to Colorado City, AZ to face El Capitan on Sept. 24 before going to Las Vegas on Sept. 27 for a rematch with Founders Academy.
