The Beaver Dam High football team was hoping to get off to a good start in Friday’s Homecoming contest against The Meadows School of Las Vegas.

Unfortunately, the Diamondbacks spotted the visitors a two-touchdown lead midway through the first quarter and then lost starting quarterback Cesar Soto minutes later to a leg injury.

The early deficit, combined with the loss of Soto, was too much for the young D-Backs to overcome as they fell 45-0 to the Mustangs at the Snake Pit.

The loss dropped BDHS to 0-3 on the season while the Meadows improved to 3-1.

Meadows scored on its first two possessions to grab a quick 13-0 lead. Soto went down on the D-Backs’ next possession and was carted off the field with a minute remaining in the first quarter.

Following the game, BDHS coaches and officials received word that the injury was not as serious as first thought.

The D-Backs got a spark of momentum when Donovan Peterson picked off a Meadows pass near midfield early in the second quarter. The offense was unable to take advantage of the good field position and BDHS was forced to punt.

The punt, however, was partially blocked with Meadows taking over on its own 40-yard line. Two plays later, the Mustangs scored on a 40-yard pass play to up their lead to 19-0.

The Mustangs would add an 82-yard touchdown pass and a 41-yard screen pass for a score with 26 seconds remaining to increase their advantage to 33-0 at the half.

The D-Backs surprised the Mustangs by recovering an onside kick at the Meadows 47-yard line to start the second half.

Michael Leach ran for five yards on two carries, but a third-down pass was intercepted by the Mustangs and returned to the BDHS 45.

The Diamondbacks threatened late in the game taking over on the Meadows 47. Nathan Vicuna ran for 12 yards to the 35, but a fumble on the following play was recovered by the Mustangs ending the threat and preserving the shutout.

Chris Wilson, Vicuna and Leach picked up some hard-earned yards on the ground for the D-Backs and Irvin Soto had a solid night kicking with a couple of punts traveling over 40 yards.

Beaver Dam will play its first road contest of the season Friday in Las Vegas against Mountain View Christian School. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
