On Monday, August 12, all Clark County schools will begin the 2019-2020 school year. Each year the Mesquite Police Department works to improve the safety of our children as they walk to and from school. This school year the Mesquite Police Department made important changes to crosswalks within school zones to ensure the safety of the children and crossing guards.

CHMS Changes:

A new crossing guard post was added to the intersection of Hafen Lane and Grapevine Road to aid Hughes Middle School students. This location will be manned 7:10 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Parents dropping their children off at Hughes Middle School will also have a new drop-off/ pick-up area immediately in front of the school on either side of Hafen Lane with a 15 minute maximum parking time. The roundabout in the parking lot will be closed before and after school to vehicle traffic. This change will be safer for the students and improve traffic flow around the school.

VVES Changes:

To help Virgin Valley Elementary students the crossing guard post at Arrowhead Lane and Mesquite Boulevard was moved to Thistle Street and Mesquite Boulevard. This will allow the crossing guards to use the traffic light to improve the visibility and safety of the students and reduce the impact on vehicle traffic. Please make sure your children use the crossing guards at Thistle Street and not the crosswalk at Arrowhead Lane. We will continue to provide a crossing guard at Old Mill Road and Sandhill Boulevard.

The crosswalks at Thistle Street and Mesquite Boulevard as well as Old Mill Road and Sandhill Boulevard will be manned 7:45 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

We are asking the community to do their part and be aware of students walking to and from school and to pay special attention to the school zones and crosswalk areas. Officers will focus on patrolling the school zones to help ensure the safety of the children and crossing guards. And to our local students we say: “Welcome back!”
