Mesquite City Manager Andy Barton submitted his resignation to the mayor and city council on June 18. His last work day is scheduled for Sept. 3. Approaching 70 years old, his resignation is more a retirement notice.

Barton was hired in April 2012 having previously worked for the Town of New Castle, Colorado, located a few miles west of Glenwood Springs. His current salary is set at $138,345.

Under the city charter passed by the Nevada State Legislature in 2017, the mayor is a ceremonial head of the city and conducts city meetings while the city manager oversees organizational and day-to-day operations. The manager is also responsible for overall preparation of the annual budget and serves as the city council’s chief policy advisor.

It’s expected that the council will conduct a nationwide search for Barton’s replacement as was done when he was hired.
