The Virgin Valley HS Lady Bulldog basketball team began the week with a thrilling 42-39 overtime win Tuesday February 6 over Sunrise Mountain HS. The Dawgs trailed 30-25 after three periods of play before rallying in the last period, forcing overtime with the game tied at, 36 all. The Bulldogs outscored the Miners 6-3 for the win. Areli Ponce led the Dawgs with 21 points followed by Nathalie Lagamayo with 11 points.

Thursday’s matchup with archrival Moapa Valley HS was a thriller from start to finish as the Dawgs lost 46-40 to the Pirates. Despite a huge defensive game from the Dawgs, they had no answer for Pirate Kaitlyn Anderson who finished with 24 points. The Pirates led 11-6 with seconds remaining in the first period before Lady Dog Lagamayo hit a rainbow shot from deep cutting the Pirate lead to 11-9 after one period. Lagamayo hit another three-ball plus scoring the first 7 points of the second period to give the Bulldogs their only lead of the game 16-15. It was all foul calls the rest of the period as the Pirates made 11-12 free throws to lead 25-20 at the break. Lagamayo led the Bulldogs scoring all 11 Bulldog points including another long three-ball to end the half. Thirteen turnovers in the half did not help the Bulldogs cause.

Lady Dawg Alexis Boatright hit a bomb to cut the Pirates lead to 35-23 to begin the third period. Pirate Lainey Cornwall followed with two three-balls of her own to stretch the Pirates lead to 34-23. The Bulldogs followed with 8 straight points to cut the Pirates advantage to 34-33 after three quarters. Boatright hit another three and Areli Ponce added 5 points during the run. The fourth period started well for the Dawgs as Sidney Ludvigson hit from downtown to give the Dawgs their last lead of the game 36-34. It was all Anderson the rest of the way as she hit six free throws to keep the Dawgs at bay. Turnovers again stymied the Dawgs as they tried to rally for the win. Lagamayo led the Bulldogs with 18 points. Lainey Cornwall added 12 points for the Pirates. The Dawgs have two games remaining on their schedule, hosting Sky Pointe on Tuesday Feb.12 and finishing their regular season against Chaparral on Thursday.
