The Charles A. Hughes Middle School basketball teams made it a clean sweep of visiting Kenny Guinn Middle School of Las Vegas before a large crowd Thursday night inside the Hawks Nest.
The boys put together their best effort of the young season in pulling away late to defeat the Titans, 44-29. It was the Hawks first victory of the season as they improved to 1-4 overall.
Meanwhile the Lady Hawks opened up a 25-point lead in the first half and cruised to a 45-8 victory, their second straight win, to improve to 2-3 overall.
Tuesday, both CHMS teams traveled to Las Vegas to face Grant Sawyer Middle School. The Lady Hawks romped to a 43-6 win while the Hawks were defeated, 47-21.
In Thursday’s win over Guinn, the Hawks surged in front 16-9 only to see the Titans rally to pull even at 16-16. A late 6-0 run gave the Hawks a 22-16 lead at the halftime break.
Guinn made several runs in the second half, but the Hawks were able to hold off the charge each time and eventually pull away in the final quarter for the win.
Stratton Waite had 15 points while Matt Hughes scored 14 to lead the Hawks. Jared Jensen added nine points with Neil Anderson, Kurt Felix and Tanner Thomas scoring two points each.
The Lady Hawks, meanwhile, forced several Lady Titan turnovers in racing out to a 14-4 advantage after one quarter of play. They increased their margin to 31-6 at halftime.
Riley Price led the way for the Lady Hawks scoring 22 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Brooklyn Montoya scored 11 points including a three-ball while Reggie Frei added six points. Hali Jackson, Destiny Moeai and Evia Toone scored two points apiece to round out the scoring.
In the victory over Sawyer on Tuesday, the Lady Hawks fell behind early, 2-0, and then scored 23 consecutive points to blow the game open.
Price had a monster game with 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Hawks while Montoya and Toone chipped in with six points each. Kiana Davis, Ana Tausinga and Jackson each added two points apiece.
CHMS will play at Findlay Middle School in North Las Vegas Monday, Jan. 14, and will host Swainston Middle School of North Las Vegas on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Hawks Nest. Both contests will have the boys playing first at 4 p.m. followed by the girls at 5:15 p.m. CHMS will travel to North Las Vegas Friday, Jan. 18, to face Seville Middle School. The boys’ game will be at 4:30 p.m. with the girls’ contest to follow at 5:45 p.m.
