The Charles A. Hughes Middle School boys and girls basketball teams will return to action this week with two non-league games.

Both CHMS teams will travel to Las Vegas to face Grant Sawyer Middle School Tuesday, Jan. 8 before hosting Kenny Guinn Middle School in the home opener on Thursday, Jan. 10 at the Hawks Nest. The home games will have the boys playing at 4 p.m. followed by the girls at 5:15 p.m.

The Hawks and Lady Hawks are both 0-3 after participating in the Faiss Middle School Preseason Invitational last month in Summerlin.

The boys fell to Garrett Middle School of Boulder City by six points and then were defeated by Cram Middle School and Faith Lutheran.

The girls lost to Faith Lutheran on a layup at the buzzer and fell by eight points to Cram. They also were defeated by Garrett.

After time off for semester testing and the holiday break, the teams resumed practices last week.

The Hawks are coached by Spence Goates and assisted by Rob Leete. Members of the team are Neil Anderson, Braylen Cameron, Kurt Felix, Isaiah Frieling, Matt Hughes, Gavin Hughes, Chandon Jensen, Jared Jensen, Reece Leavitt, Tristin Murguia, Alex Rivera, Tanner Thomas, Stratton Waite and Drake Wakefield. Managers are Trey Hafen and Jaden Wilson.

The Lady Hawks are coached by Joe Shepard and assisted by Bob Snell. Members of the team are Lilliana Cabrales, Kiana Davis, Audrey Fiso, Reggie Frei, Hali Jackson, Tyra Ludvigson, Destiny Moeai, Brooklyn Montoya, Riley Price, Shaylee Sudweeks, Ana Tausinga, Katelee Tietjen, Evia Toone and Camryn Totten. Managers are Ember Anderson and Victoria Faught.

The first league game for CHMS will be Jan. 14 against Findlay Middle School in North Las Vegas. The league home opener will be Jan. 16 against Swainston Middle School. Boys will tipoff at 4 p.m. followed by the girls at 5:15 p.m.
