Former Virgin Valley High School wrestling standout Ty Smith was recently named Drexel University’s Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec. 2-9.
Smith, a freshman who was a four-time Nevada state champion as well as an All-American while wrestling for the Bulldogs, was honored by Drexel for the week of Dec. 2-9.
Competing at 133 pounds, Smith recorded a 6-4 victory in overtime against Lance Peters of Army West Point in a recent meet at Drexel’s Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia. He ended the match in overtime with a takedown.
Smith recently competed at the annual Cliff Kane Invitational in Las Vegas where he reached the round of 32. Prior to the Las Vegas meet, he went 2-0 for the Dragons at the Northwest Duals in Albany, New York defeating wrestlers from The Citadel and Wheeling Jesuit.
The next action for Smith and Drexel will be Jan. 1-2 at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
