Abbie Barnum set two school records along with the girls 4×800 relay team to help power the Lady Bulldogs to a third-place finish at the 3A state track and field meet Friday and Saturday at Foothill High School in Henderson.

Virgin Valley totaled 65 points to finish behind state champion Truckee which had 81 and runner-up Cheyenne with 76.

“It was a great effort by the girls to finish third,” VVHS head coach Gary Hartman said. “This is the highest finish in many years for a Virgin Valley girls track team.”

The VVHS boys, meanwhile, scored 14 points to finish in 16th place. Sunrise Mountain captured the state title with 70 points to finish ahead of Mojave (64) and Pahrump Valley (59).

Barnum finished runner-up in both the 100 high hurdles and 300 low hurdles, but set school records in each race. She ran a 15.05 in the 100 hurdles and 45.09 in the 300.

The girls 4×800 relay team consisting of Alyssa Ponce, Sarah Walters, Viviana Archuleta-Vega and Macee Bundy also set a new school mark with a time of 10:46.67 to finish fifth. The group shaved off almost 30 seconds of their previous best time this season.

Bernice Fiso placed fourth in the discus (106-11) and sixth in the shot put (33-05.50) with Emma Barnum finishing sixth in the triple jump (32-02.25) and seventh in the high jump (4-04).

Nikita Eskelsen was fourth in the long jump (15-00.75), Elena Andelin sixth in the high jump (4-06), Viviana Archuleta-Vega sixth in the 3200 meters (13:24.46) and Emma Wilson seventh in the pole vault (7-0).

The 4×100 relay team of Emily Teerlink, Abbie Barnum, Emma Barnum and Nikita Eskelsen finished third with a time of 50.89. The 4×200 team of Teerlink, Eskelsen, Hailee Thornley and Macee Bundy was seventh at 1:51.96 and the 4×400 team consisting of Alyssa Ponce, Sarah Walters, Eskelsen and Bundy also placed seventh with a time of 4:26.39.

Reid Jensen led the boys placing fifth in the shot put (43-01.50) and sixth in the discus (116-11).

A trio of Bulldogs finished seventh, Brogan Bingham in the pole vault (11-06), Devin Cox in the 110 high hurdles (16.09) and Jayden Dalton in the shot put (42-01.50).

The 4×400 relay team of Christian Martinez, Victor Colmenero, Vicente Pinto and Tyson Wilson place eighth with a time of 3:44.42.
