The Mesquite Elks Lodge held its annual Nevada State Elks Major Project fundraiser Saturday, March 18, which raises funds for the Safe Haven child protective services and domestic violence programs. The event is called a “Hog Callin’”. Over 70 Elks members were served a breakfast that included pork sausage and bacon. The blue piggy banks that members used to collect spare change during the year were corralled into a special “Pig Pin”.

The winner of the heaviest pig was Wilhemina Hixson, whose pig weighed in at 6.047 pounds. Dennis Baylor, whose pig sported a Jersey Cow costume carrying an “Eat More Beef” sign, won the best-dressed pig. Don Coleman, PER, chaired the event. There were 17,713 coins collected, equaling $1,529.93 for the program.

The Elks wish to extend their grateful appreciation to the Bank of Nevada for allowing their coin machine to be used for sorting, counting and totaling these coins. Without their assistance, Lodge members would have been counting coins for months.

This is just one of many community events sponsored by the Mesquite Elks Lodge. Anyone interested in joining the Lodge can call (702) 345-2811.
