WCFA’s featured pet is Sara, a happy, sweet 2-year-old female Shih Tzu who gets along well with people and other gentle dogs. She loves to play with toys and is good on leash.

While in the shelter, Sara had surgery to remove a large bladder stone. She feels so much better now, but she will need special food and filtered water to keep her healthy. We’ve also been treating her for an ear infection, and she will need to have her ears cleaned regularly, which she doesn’t mind at all if there’s a treat involved! Sara is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and micro-chipped.

She’s ready to go to a loving, forever home.

Available Cats/kittens:

Mitzi is an adorable 18 week old kitten. She has been altered. She is an inquisitive, sweet, little girl. You can fill out an application if you are interested in Mitzi by going to wecareforanimals.org.

Tommy is the last of a litter of five. He is about 16 weeks old. Tommy is friendly and enjoys play time. He would love to find his own family and will gladly give lots of love in return.

Available Dogs:

Berkley came back to WCFA through no fault of his own. There is an illness in the family and with ongoing multiple out-of-town doctor visits, it wasn’t possible to give him the time he deserves. Berkeley is a handsome and sweet little Chihuahua-Min Pin mix who weighs 8 lbs and is approximately 4 years. He is house trained to a dog door, loves walks and does very well on leash. Berkeley attaches himself to one person in the household and can be very protective of that individual. Therefore his new person will need to be aware of his protective nature and that he may nip. He may be best in a home with a woman or a mature couple who will work with Berkeley and be on top of his protective nature.

Pet Events: Our next pet adoption will be August 13th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (our summer hours) at Suite 1, 150 North Yucca in Mesquite. If you have an interest in our adoptable pets please go to wecareforanimals.org to complete an application online. If you want to see one of our available animals before or after our pet adoption, please contact us and we will arrange a meet and greet at everyone’s convenience.

Foster Pet Parents needed: WCFA depends on reliable pet fosters to save homeless cats and dogs. The number of homeless pets that WCFA can foster is determined by its available foster homes. Fostering provides a temporary safe and loving home until adoption. Please go to wecareforanimals.org to complete our foster application.

WCFA offers a wonderful low-cost/free opportunity to spay/neuter your pets to prevent accidental litters and keep your pet happy and healthy. Our target areas are Mesquite, Bunkerville and the Arizona Strip. Spay/Neuter Assistance Applications are available at Mesquite Veterinary Clinic located at 371 Riverside Road and Virgin Valley Veterinary Hospital at 660 Hardy Way. Half of all litters born in the U.S. are accidents that overburden shelters and rescues.

Cats and Dogs Good for the Heart

Research has shown the long-term benefits of owning a cat include protection for your heart. Over the 20 years of one study, people who never owned a cat were 40% more likely to die of a heart attack than those who had. Another study showed that dog owners had a significantly better survival rate one year after a heart attack. Overall, pet owners have a lower risk of dying from any cardiac disease, including heart failure.
