SMITH and HOLDEN BEAT THE WINDS
After very strong winds all Monday night eight MMGA players packed their bags and stayed home in their warm little beds. Joe Smith and Mike Holden took advantage of the missing and both players played very well considering the winds were still up a bit. Smith played steady on the front nine of Falcon Ridge with 40. Started the back nine with a nice birdie four on the par five 10th hole on his way to a superb 44 on the back for 81 and medalist honors. Holden, with a handicap over 30, had only one hole on the front over five. Shot 10 strokes more on the back for 54 and a total 98 and blew away the field for a net 66 taking first place low net honors by five shots. Rory Tomsic (84) and Willie Nelson (94) tied for second with their 71’s. Each player went bogey, par, bogey until Tomsic earned second with a par five on the 4th hndcp hole.
One bad hole on the front side kept Tim Bergstrom (87) from shooting a low eighty round. But his net 72 won him 4th place. Frank Vandeweght (85) and Dave Miller (89) had net 73’s which Vandeweghe parred the first hdcp hole for the 5th spot dropping Miller to 6th. Joe Smith also had the hole of the day on the par five 12th. His tee shot caught the wind and rolled down the hill but stopped one foot short of water. He chunked his second shot 20yds into the bunker. Hit a great sand shot that stopped 85yds short of the green. His 4th shot hit the green and stopped five feet from the cup where he putted in for a “sweet” par.
MILLER BEATS YEH AGAIN BY ONE SHOT
There seems to be a nice rivalry building within the MMGA between Tim Miller and Andrew Yeh for the weekly medalist title. Thursday at the Palms Miller got the best of Yeh for the second time in their last three encounters. This time it was a head to head match. Yeh took the lead after the first nine holes with two birdies and a score of 38 to Miller’s 40. Miller quickly got one stroke back with a birdie on the 10th hole. They would tie the next four holes. Miller caught Yeh on the par five 15th, got one more on 17 to shoot 76 and win by one shot. Terry Gardner recorded three birdies for a great round of 83 to lead the forward tee players with a net 66. Jim Naccarato (81) and Greg Sullivan (80) were tied for second. Naccarato shot par, bogey, bogey, par to take second as Sullivan bogeyed the fourth hdcp hole. Tom Durenberger (81) tied David Miller (83) but won 4th place with his par on the par five 4th hole while Miller made a bogey six. Mike Holden (99) continues to share some of the net gold finishing 6th with
a net 69. Tom Durenberger had the putt of the day on the par four ninth hole. He putted straight up the hill to a jar 96 feet on the back of the green for a “sweet” birdie three and a skin.
