The Arts Mean Business. To help measure the economic impact of the arts industry in Nevada, Virgin Valley Artists Association (VVAA) is partnering with the Nevada Arts Council to participate in the national Arts and Economic Prosperity 5 study.
This survey is the fifth conducted by Americans for the Arts in the past 20 years. VVAA will be part of a network of study partners in communities across the state working with the Nevada Arts Council throughout 2016. VVAA is participating to ensure the study includes important data from Mesquite within the national survey.
“Many don’t think of nonprofit arts organizations as businesses,” said Katherine Cole, Vice-President of VVAA, “but this study will make clear that the arts are a formidable industry in our community both purchasing goods and services from local merchants as well as providing goods and services to our clientele and helping to drive tourism and economic development.”
“We are delighted to work with VVAA on this important national initiative,” said Susan Boskoff, Nevada Arts Council’s Executive Director. “I know that our customized findings will demonstrate clearly that the arts are considered a renewable source of pride and energy across the Silver State.”
With a release date in June 2017, the study’s findings will include total dollars spent by nonprofit arts and cultural organizations and total dollars spent by their audiences as a direct result of attending arts and culture events; number of full-time equivalent jobs supported by arts spending; amount of household income – including salaries and wages – generated by arts spending; and amount of local and state government tax revenues generated by arts spending.
VVAA will collect data from 11 other Mesquite local nonprofit arts and culture organizations, including local theater, music and dance companies, museums, galleries and arts education organizations.
Information will also be gathered from attendees at arts events using a short, anonymous questionnaire that captures spending information as a direct result of attending the event.
