With less than a week to go until Mesquite’s First Annual Parade of Lights takes place on Dec. 2, the community is all abuzz with excitement.
While official registration closes Wednesday, Nov. 25, people are encouraged to come get some great ideas for next year’s event. The parade will set up at the Mesquite Stake, 100 N. Arrowhead Lane by 4:30 p.m. for parade kickoff to commence at 5 p.m. From there, the bright floats will make their way eastbound on Mesquite Boulevard until they reach City Hall at 10 E. Mesquite Blvd.
Each participant is required to pay their entry fee with canned goods. Businesses that are also taking part are rushing to stockpile their mounds of items as well, as there will be an award given for the Most Food Raised.
Those who are planning on attending and watching the parade from the sidelines are also asked to bring two canned goods from their pantry to help fill up the Salvation Army and Virgin Valley Food Bank’s rooms as we approach Christmas. Mesquite Fire Department will have personnel and volunteers walking in the parade to collect the goods brought by onlookers and hope to fill a few of the City’s trucks with them.
At about 6:15 p.m., once participants have parked their vehicles and arrive at City Hall, Santa is expected to visit and kickoff the annual Christmas tree lighting. There will be hot cocoa, cookies and a lineup of entertainers and speakers as in years past. At the conclusion of the tree lighting, winners for the parade contests will be announced.
