The Virgin Valley High School Lady Dawg volleyball team left no doubt that they are the top team in 1-A Sunrise Conference play as they came back from a 0-1 deficit to defeat Boulder City 3-1 in the Dawg House Monday evening. Leading the way for the Dawgs was ‘Big Dawg’ Bernice Fiso with 23 huge kills and 16 digs. Her sister Janella added 13 service aces and 38 assists plus Lexi Thompson came through with 16 digs of her own. It was a huge win for the Dawgs against a very good Eagles team.
The Eagles jumped on the Dawgs early taking a 5-1 lead in the first set which they never relinquished the rest of the game despite heroics from Bernice Fiso. The Dawgs trailed 23-19 and 24-20 late in the match before Bernice Fiso showed why she is one of the top players in southern Nevada volleyball, hitting four straight kills to cut the deficit to 24-23. The Eagles big kill ended the set with the Eagles on top 25-23.
The second set of the day found an aroused Bulldog team jumping on the Eagles for a 16-10 lead before the Boulder City called a time-out. Janella Fiso had three service aces to lead the Dawgs at this point of the set. The Eagles closed to 21-19 before Emma Barnum had a big kill and Janella Fiso made a huge dig bringing a loud roar from the home crowd. Two kills by Bernice Fiso and three service points from Barnum finished off the Eagles 25-19.
The Bulldogs took an early 6-1 lead in the third set before the Eagles called time to regroup. The Dawgs held their lead at 21-16 after a kill from Barnum. The game was on, as the Eagles flew back, to tie the set at 21-21 before taking the lead 23-21 on three kills and an ace. The Dawgs facing match point 24-22 made a huge comeback with Barnum serving four points for a 26-24 Bulldog win and a 2-1 advantage.
The fourth and last set of the evening was a Fiso feast as Janella had 12 service points and 5 aces. Bernice added six kills to help the Dawgs to a 25-15 win over the tired Eagles. It was a huge TEAM win for the Lady Dawgs as they opened a two game advantage over the Eagles with four games remaining. The Dawgs record stands at 10-0 in league play and 20-7 overall. The Bulldogs travel to Del Sol on Wed. Oct.21 before hosting Desert Pines on Oct.27.
