Abbie Barnum named 1-A Sunrise Conference Most Valuable Player
The Virgin Valley High School girls soccer team capped an amazing year Friday evening, Nov. 13 holding their annual awards banquet at the student center. The 1-A Sunrise Conference champion Bulldogs honored seniors and individual award recipients at the banquet.
The evening began with a film of the girl’s activities on and off the field before Coach Bob Snell stepped up to the microphone to announce the first event of the evening. Coach Snell introduced assistant coach K.C. Anderson and former player Keara Anderson who proceeded to award certificates to the J.V. players.
Coaches Snell and Anderson then gave letters to those players who earned them this season. Snell announced the 1-A All-Conference Sunrise team for 2015. Making the first team were Lady Dawgs Spencer Green, Abbie Barnum, Kallie Graves and Marlene Quiarte. Bulldogs Karla Correa, Jasmyn Dominguez, Kari Wakefield, Kennedi Ludvigson and Taylor Waite were named to the all-conference second team.
A big hand went up for Abbie Barnum and Spencer Green who were announced as the 1-A Sunrise Conference Most Valuable Player and Goalkeeper of the Year respectively. Barnum had 18 goals and assists for the year and Green had 14 shutouts. Snell also announced that Green had the most wins for a goalkeeper in the history of the program. Barnum was named to the 1-A Southern Division team and Green was named to the second team.
The last awards of the evening went to Snell for Coach of the Year and Anderson for Assistant Coach of the Year. Abbie Barnum, on behalf of the returning players, gave parting gifts to seniors Spencer Green, Jasmyn Dominguez, Marlene Quiarte, Marisol Guzman, Bianca Salas and Taylor Perkins.
The Bulldogs finished the season with an 11-1-2 record and the first league championship for the Bulldog girls program.
