The Virgin Valley High School Bulldog girl soccer team behind the return of forward Abbie Barnum’s hat trick rolled over the Del Sol High School Dragons 7-0 Wednesday September 30 at the Mesquite Sports and Events Center. Barnum’s return was critical, after missing a month of play with a concussion, as freshman forward Karla Correa went on the disabled list and may miss two weeks of play.
Barnum didn’t waste any time attacking goal for the Dawgs, taking five shots on goal in the first five minutes of the match. She didn’t find goal until the 15 minute mark giving the Dawgs a 1-0 advantage. Marlene Quiarte added a goal on an indirect chip shot over the goalkeeper 26 minutes into the match. Barnum followed 30 seconds later with her second goal from deep into the box and a 3-0 lead. Barnum got the hat trick with seconds remaining in the first half giving the Lady Dawgs an insurmountable 4-0 advantage. “I like the way we moved the ball,” said Bulldog coach Bob Snell.
The Bulldog starters and reserves did not let up in the second half as their defensive frontline denied any opportunity for a Dragon goal. Chantel Galindo, Kallie Graves and Katie Zuniga scored goals in the second period making the final score Dawgs 7-0 over the Dragons. Lady Dawgs Madison Cheney, Taylor Waite, Barnum, Graves and Zuniga also had assists for their day’s work. Spencer Green, through her fifth shutout of the season. “We need to keep it up for our next match as we host the most improved team in 1-A play, Moapa Valley on Tuesday at the events center,” added Coach Snell. “I can’t wait to get Barnum and Correa on the field at the same time.” The win moved the Ladies to within one win of league leader TECH who fell Wednesday to Sunrise Mountain. The Dawgs are at 3-1-1 versus TECH’s 4-1 record.
