The Virgin Valley High School Lady Bulldog volleyball squad exhibited mid-season form Thursday night defeating a good Liberty High School team 3-0. “We are where we ought to be,” said Bulldog coach Lori Barnum. “We are good and the kids expect to win.”

The Lady Dawgs jumped on the Patriots early in the first match winning easily 25-17 behind the net play of Bernice Fiso, Emma Barnum and the serves of Kaydee Bingham. Fiso and Barnum had 8 kills between them in the match. Bingham’s serves blew the match wide open as she contributed 9 straight points to give the Dawgs an surmountable lead of 16-6.

The Lady Dawgs mettle was tested in the evening’s second match winning 27-25 over the feisty Patriots. The Dawgs trailed 18-22 late in the match before Coach Barnum called timeout to regroup her squad. “I called time to let the kids know they could come back for the win by playing Bulldog volleyball,” said Coach Barnum. Fiso and Barnum controlled the net with two kills each to tie the match at 24-24 as the large home town crowd went vocal. Fiso finished the match with a kill and dink giving the Dawgs a hard fought 27-25 victory.

The Bulldogs trailed early in the third and deciding match of the evening 6-7 before exerting themselves to take a 25-20 win. Barnum’s net play was instrumental in the win. Bingham added two kills during the Bulldog rally.

Barnum had 10 kills to lead the Bulldog net squad. Bernice Fiso was outstanding with 9 kills and 7 digs. Janella Fiso added 23 assists and Bingham finished with four aces and 14 service points. The Bulldogs travel for their next two preseason matches before returning on September 17 to host Sunrise Mountain in their league opener.
