Law Enforcement Officers across the United States will be honored on Friday, May 15, for National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.
Police Week events in Washington, D.C. honor and remember law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Some of the events include: an Annual Blue Mass, 27th Annual Candlelight Vigil, Police Unity Tour, National Police Survivors Conference, 13th Annual Honor Guard Competition, 20th Annual Law Ride, and the 34rd Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service.
In 1962, a Congressional resolution was approved authorizing and requesting President John F. Kennedy to designate May 15 of each year as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day. In 1994, President Clinton signed a law requiring the American flag to be lowered to half-staff on this day as a tribute to the law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. The law directs flags be flown at half-staff at public buildings and/or private residences on Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.
Yesterday, Chief Troy Tanner stood before the Mayor and City Council and stated all members of the Mesquite Police Department will wear a shroud band over their badge on May 15, symbolizing their fallen brothers & sisters. Chief Tanner also encouraged citizens who display a flag, to lower it to half-staff, in remembrance of law enforcement officers who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
