The Bruce King Memorial Scholarship is given out to local Virgin Valley High School Seniors to help them with the increasing costs of college. It was created by golfers who visit Mesquite during the Mesquite Amateur to honor a friend who passed away due to cancer in 2012.
The golf tournament itself is just a small part of the way money is raised to fund the scholarship. Each golfer who plays in the event on both days donates $5 to the fund. Both events this year on May 24 and 25 are already sold out.
There is also a raffle which raises money during the week of the event. Golf Mesquite donates to the fund as well and golfers routinely come by to donate cash, always saying ‘here is something for the kids.’
We, the friends of Bruce King, would love to see the scholarship grow and help the children even more than it has in past years. Last year the fund gave out $3,500 in scholarships and we plan to do about the same this year, but our goal is to raise that number to the $5,000 mark.
How do we do that? We need a little help from the community. For both days of the golf tournament we are selling tee sponsorships. The cost of the hole is $50. What does that give you? We will make a sign that will be placed on the tee at both courses for all of our golfers to see. It’s a great form of advertising for you while also helping a worthy cause right in your own backyard. However, if you can’t help with cash, but would like to donate an item to the raffle, that would also be greatly appreciated.
The city of Mesquite has been so good to us and brought so much joy to Bruce while he was alive that we want to give back for many years to come. Hopefully, we can make a difference in a child’s life together.
