The Virgin Valley High School Lady Bulldogs softball team won their first game Tuesday afternoon 8-7 over Cheyenne High School in the 1-A Southern Regional softball tournament game at Cheyenne. Bulldog Becca Bramlage continued her late season heroics pitching and batting the Dawgs to the win. Bramlage pitched a complete 7 inning game and led the Dawgs with four runs batted in and a home run. Janelle Fiso went 2-4 including a double in a supporting role.
The Dawgs fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but took the lead in the second with two runs. Cheyenne regained the lead in the fourth inning with three runs to take a 4-2 lead going into the fifth. The Dawgs jumped on the Cheyenne pitcher for five runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-4 advantage. Cheyenne refused to give up scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Dawgs lead to 7-6. The Bulldogs increased their lead to 8-6 in the seventh and final inning with a needed insurance run as they held off Cheyenne in their half of the inning winning 8-7.
The Bulldogs will travel today to face 1-A Sunrise Division opponent Boulder City in round two of the double loss elimination tournament. The Eagles went undefeated in league play with a 12-0 record including 20-0 and 7-0 wins over the Bulldogs. The Eagles defeated Mojave 14-4 in their first round game. The win insures two more tourney games for the Lady Bulldogs. Win or lose against the Eagles, the Dawgs will continue to play against an unknown opponent on Thursday, May 15 at host Mojave High School.
