Scott Mattingly is one of the marquee bowlers in Mesquite and has been since first changing his zip code to one in Mesquite in time for the 2020-21 season. In fact, he won the high-average crown his first three years and missed a four-peat in the 2023-24 season after finishing second to Jeremy Telford’s 226.
Scott Mattingly
And now here we are with the 2024-’25 season in the books and he won the high-average title at the Virgin River Bowling Center with a 222 average compiled over 66 games in the Monday Scratch League, and the way he’s throwing the rock and mowing down pins he has a legit shot at making another run at a four-peat.
During the long grind of his MS League season, his highest series was a 776, with only Al Gans (781) rolling a higher one. And the only MSL bowlers who eclipsed Mattingly’s highest game of 279 were Jared Bundy (300), John Martin (299), Mike Rogers (290) and Felix Cruz (289).
An interesting dynamic with his house-high 222 average is the notable divergence in his really lofty 229 average over all of his league’s first games, compared with a 215 average over all of his MS League’s third games. Additionally, his weekly average score over the course of the season was a 638 series.
Mattingly also is the only bowler who’s ever competed in league play over the years at the Virgin River Bowling Center who has bragging rights to a pair of 800 series scores (809 & 804), and he joins Sal Diaz and the the late, Darwin Wimer as the only bowlers who have tossed three 300 games at the VRBC.
For newer bowlers not familiar with Wimer, he still ranks as the all-time greatest bowler in Mesquite’s bowling history who won11 straight high-average titles before finishing 2nd in a close race to a former five-time PBA champion bowler, Matt Surina.
Here is list of other bowlers from the various leagues who finished with the next highest averages for the 2024-25 season: Michael Ramirez 219; Austin Finster 217; Mike Saldivar 217; Mike Yoder 214; John Hollaway 213; Mike Rogers 212; Milan Carr 212; John Martin 211; Jeremy “JT” Turlington 211; Randy Brown 211; Jared Bundy 210; Dean Baum 209; Al Gans 208; Sal Diaz 208; Dan Aslin 207; Dylan Kesl 207; Kelly Williamson 207; Darren Simonds 207.
