As I approach the two month mark as being your new mayor in Mesquite Nevada, I continue to be even more excited about our city. Each day I learn new things about the place I’ve lived in for the majority of my life. We tend to stay in our own circles in life but this new job has given me the opportunity to step outside of mine and see so much more of our city.

These past two months have been extremely busy and exciting for us. The Parade of Lights through their efforts collected over 20,000 pounds of food that will stay here in our local food banks as well as the fun and entertaining parade.

The women’s golf club was able to raise over $23,000, which they donated to the local cancer society. Those are just a couple of the many charitable activities that have taken place in town. We are so lucky to have such generous people living in this city.

There have also been many fun events to attend. The car show was a great success, and the balloon festival was wonderful as always.

A big event for the city was the grand opening of our new skate park. The turnout was incredible and the kids have been thoroughly enjoying it since. It amazed me the skill of so many of the riders and the tricks they were able to perform. The designers and builder did a great job of making it a place where riders of all levels could enjoy.

I would like to thank our parks and recreation department, as well as our other government officials for making it happen.

We have much to look forward to. Our hotels and casinos have been busy remodeling and expanding and continue to do so. Our community theater and schools have theatrical performances coming just around the corner.

The art center continues to have events and classes for all ages. There are too many good things to mention here but I will try to update you with as much information on the great opportunities available in future articles.

While all is not perfect here in our city, it is a great place to live and we will continue to work together to make it even better.

It is my honor to be a part of your team as we work toward that goal.

Jesse Whipple is mayor of the City of Mesquite.
