The Exchange Club of Mesquite has retired its 18th annual 1000 Flags Over
Mesquite for this year. Although we sponsor this event, it is a community
endeavor and we would like to acknowledge the people who continue to make it
possible.
1000 Flags Over Mesquite is the Exchange Club’s way of publicly saying thank you
to those who have or are serving our country.
Our local businesses contribute so very generously of their checkbooks and make
it possible for us to “pay it back” to so many who will benefit.
Those people who participate in our Veterans’ day and closing ceremonies are so
very welcomed. Some have traveled from Las Vegas and some from St. George to
help us honor our veterans. Of particular note each year is Mesquite Fire Rescue
who presents a very moving flag retirement at the end of our closing ceremony.
Nick Montoya and his staff at the Mesquite Recreation Center go out of their way
to make sure the week runs without a hitch. No matter when or why we call, they
respond in a cheerful manner and never make us feel bad about calling on them.
Because of who and what the flags represent, we resolve never to leave them
alone. Caring members of our community respectfully sit with the flags. At least
2 people sit 3 hour shifts 24/7 for the 8 days the field is posted. Many take more
than one shift and all say they are honored to do so. Many are veterans
themselves. Most return each year to do it again. It is such a testament to the
hallowed reason we hold this event that they are there no matter the hour of the
day or night or the weather.
Those who show up on the first Sunday to help post the flags and those who stay
after the closing ceremony on the last Sunday to help us retire the field are
phenomenal in their ability to see what needs to be done on both days and then
get it done.
The field is retired now and the flags are resting in their custom bin to be kept
safe and dry for the next 51 weeks. In addition to thanking our military in this
way, a great big heartfelt thank you to each of you who make it possible.
