Safekey – After School Fun Supervision

Safekey is an after school enrichment program at Virgin Valley Elementary School for students who have working parents or just need a fun, supervised place to be for a couple hours after school gets out.

The Department of  Athletics & Leisure Services Department Director,Nicholas Montoya, said that Safekey is an after-school recreational enrichment program held at Virgin Valley Elementary School. Participants must be a minimum age of 5 and attending the elementary school’s kindergarten program to 5th grade.

“This fun-filled program focuses on homework, crafts, games and special activities as an alternative while parents work,” Montoya said.

The Department of  Athletics & Leisure Services  Education and Recreation Specialist is Janeece Noel .

“Safekey is about making sure that our students that have working parents have a safe place to go after school where they are supervised,” Noel said. “ I believe this helps our community because we don’t have a lot of young kids unattended and thus causing problems. Do problems still occur, yes, but Safekey gives parents and children security in knowing that they are safe, taken care of and having fun.”

Montoya said the Safekey site is located at the Virgin Valley Elementary School cafeteria/multipurpose room. These kids will not leave the area until their parents/guardians pick them up from the program. They will have certain times for activities, homework, snacks and crafts.

This is the only location for the Safekey program. If parents want to bring them over to Virgin Valley Elementary School from JL Bowler they are welcome to do so, Montoya said.

“ The Safekey Program is staffed by trained recreation leaders that lead children in an activity, games, sports, arts and crafts,” Montoya said “In addition, a snack is provided and homework study period is available. The Safekey program is administered by The City of Mesquite Athletics & Leisure Services Department, which is dedicated to providing the best possible after school program for children.”

Montoya said the Mesquite Athletics & Leisure Services Dept staff makes up the nucleus for quality activities and program supervision. The program offers a variety of stimulating activities designed to help your child grow socially and physically, as well as providing homework time and snacks.

Our goal is to create an atmosphere in which safety, fun, recreation and social skills take place,” Montoya said “ Registration is being taken now at the Mesquite Recreation Center, 100 W. Old Mill Road. The school will provide parents with information on the SafeKey program, but cannot register children. The program is in coordination with the Clark County School District Calendar.”
