Mesquite Monthly, which is approaching its second anniversary serving the city of Mesquite, was recently approved for membership in the Nevada Press Association.

“This is a pretty big deal for Mesquite Monthly,” said Kirk Kern, owner Mesquite Monthly. “There are a set of criteria that must be met for approval in terms of news value.”

Kern would know about these requirements. He was a member of the NPA’ s board of directors for almost 10 years and was board president in 2014.

Mesquite Monthly was launched in August of 2020. Kern was publisher of Mesquite Local News when the newspaper was shuttered by Battle Born Media.

“Once the newspaper closed, I kept hearing from people how they missed the print newspaper,”  said Kern, who was chief operating officer of Battle Born Media. “So I decided to go back in the market with my own publication. So far, it’s been a big success.”

Mesquite Monthly is distributed the first Wednesday of each month. Along with the print publication, Kern has contracted with his former employer to relaunch MesquiteLocalNews.com with daily news posts.

“MesquiteLocalNews.com has great traffic for a community news website,” Kern said. “We have about 40,000 unique visitors a month and a daily email newsletter that goes out to about 1,400 requested subscribers.”

Mesquite Monthly was approved for NPA membership by its board of directors along with The Bristlecone Times in Ely and CarsonNow.com in Carson City.
